Mark Herrera, Maria Attard win the 5km Race

Home to one of Malta's most enduring legends, Maqluba in Qrendi played host to the inaugural edition of the Intersport 5km and 10km Road Running Series on Sunday morning.

Having built a reputation for creating some of Malta's most attractive running race routes, the Intersport Maqluba Edition provided athletes the right combination of a challenging yet scenic route in one of Malta's possibly lesser known areas.

Charlton Debono emerged the winner of the 10 kilometre race, having asserted his position in front of the pack from the word go  and setting the pace for the route which started off with a hill within the first few hundred metres.  Behind Debono was Matthew Xuereb who also was in fine form and gave a determined performance to finish in second place.  Trailing behind in third place was Juan Pablo Ruiz.

Meanwhile in the females' category Catherine Chetcuti took an immediate lead with Dzintra Grech and Charyl Fava tailing behind.  Grech was in second place after the first five kilometres but a push from Fava just past the 5 kilometre mark saw her overtake to finish the race in second place.

The  one loop 5km race was also a highly competitive affair with Mark Herrera out for a resolute win, having had to miss out on a few races through injury.  Jean Claude Randon gave a good account of himself pushing behind Herrera to finish the race twelve seconds behind him.  Joining on the podium in third place was Neil Brimmer, just seven seconds behind Randon.    Maria Attard was the front runner in this race winning ahead of Charla Pia Vella and Nadia Mifsud who came in second and third place respectively.

The Intersport Maqluba Edition organising team would like to thank the Local Councils of Qrendi, Mqabba and Zurrieq, as well as the district Police and Transport Malta for their support towards this event.
