Mario Cutajar’s legacy

Sunday, 29 May 2022, 07:45 Last update: about 3 years ago

Credit must be given where it is due in spite of everything. Good leadership is so vital for the delivery of Malta's public services and former Principal Permanent Secretary Mario Cutajar fitted perfectly well in such leadership throughout all the years that he headed our public service. He calmly and intelligently brought about effectiveness in the upper echelons of the public sector in promoting leadership skills, not just at the top, but filtering down through the ranks.

He may have had his share of controversies with a few institutions and public figures by making unwarranted outbursts but, undeniably, he motivated and encouraged others. He communicated clearly and listened attentively. He used to think critically and was somewhat quite trustworthy. Above all, he showed resilience as his work as head of the public service was quite challenging in any environment. Great work and great leadership often go hand-in-hand. Mario Cutajar was a true demonstration of that.

May he enjoy his retirement and may his successor follow in his footsteps.
