A man has been hospitalised after a suspected medical issue led to his truck crashing into a service room, police have told The Malta Independent.

The accident happened at around 1:30pm at the mouth of the Regional Road tunnels in St. Julian’s leading to Paceville.

A police spokesperson told this newsroom that the driver of the Isuzu truck appeared to have suffered from a medical issue which caused him to crash.

The truck crashed into a service room which was built recently as part of Infrastructure Malta’s tunnel restoration project.

The condition of the man is still pending, but he has been taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment.

In a short statement on social media, Infrastructure Malta said that the damage to the service room had led to lighting inside the tunnels to be cut-off.  However, the agency said, the new emergency lighting fitted during the rehabilitation project had turned on automatically.

Clearing of debris will commence in the coming hours, the agency said.
