The third man who was set to be charged with a murder which happened in Paceville last week on Sunday has been re-admitted to hospital.

The man – a Romanian national – was set to be charged with the fatal stabbing of Joseff Rivas who was killed in Paceville last Monday.

Two brothers, 35-year-old Ionut Iulian Tanase and 32-year-old Dan-Andrei Tanase have already been arraigned before magistrate Ian Farrugia charged with murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, carrying a knife in public without a licence and breaching the peace.

The two brothers were also charged with offences relating to living off the earnings of prostitution. They have pleaded not guilty.

The third suspect could not be arraigned with the two brothers after he was admitted to Mater Dei Hospital to receive medical care, and he was re-admitted to hospital on Sunday after complaining of ill health again.

This came after he was interrogated by police and as he was set to be arraigned on the same day.  It is unclear when the suspect – who is 31 years old – will be cleared to face the court.

He is set to face the same charges as the two brothers faced on Wednesday.

Investigations indicated that the murder was the result of a dispute involving an organised crime syndicate working in the field of prostitution.

Women showed the police messages indicating they were told to leave the country.

During the interrogation, one of the accused had told the police that after seeing all this going on, they could not fail to act.

The victim had been at a cafe in Ross street when they were approached by three men. CCTV showed a few seconds of communication, followed by a commotion involving the victim.  He was stabbed and was still alive when the police were called about the case.

Rivas however died soon after.

News reports about the murder claimed that Rivas, 44 and who holds dual Romanian and UK citizenship, had been a person of interest to international intelligence services due to suspected ties to organised crime.

The Malta Police Force had reportedly been working together with the UK and Romanian police forces on the investigation.

Romanian media reports also linked Rivas to armed robbery and attempted murder in the past.  He was among a group of men arrested in Romania in 2015 on suspicion of being involved in an armed break-in which resulted in the theft of 100,000.
