The park and ride in Xewkija will have 300 parking spaces, the Gozo Ministry said.

Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri said that in order to reduce heavy traffic and congestion in the area of Mġarr, the Ministry, through European funds under the SMITHS project, is building a multimodal hub in the area known as Ta' Xhajma, limits of Xewkija.

He explained that the aim of the project is to regenerate and transform the area into a parking space for 300 vehicles and dedicated charging spaces of electric vehicles and pedelecs.

This centre will also include a terminal building for electricity operated buses.

The Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Chris Bonett said that a project like this fits into the government's goals, that is to continue investing in projects in favour of carbon neutrality and green projects.

"With the operational programs we promise that we will continue to increase similar investments in order for  beautify our country and to improve the quality of life of Maltese and Gozitan citizens," said Bonett.

Through this project, an existing road will be repaired and covered with tarmac. Additionally there will also be pedestrian access and it will be shielded from the rain. Additionally rain water be collected in a reservoir.

This project will be only one floor and it will include a green roof over the parking area that provides an outdoor recreation facility.
