Price of eggs rose by 30% in one year

The price of eggs in Malta rose by 30% between January 2022 and January 2023, Eurostat statistics show.

Food prices have increased substantially over 2022, Eurostat said. "One of the food products with the highest price increase is eggs."

Data for January 2023 shows that the price of eggs in the EU was, on average, 30.4% higher than in January 2022.

"Much smaller price increases were recorded (in the EU) in January 2022 compared with January 2021 (+7%) and in January 2021 compared with the pre-COVID-19 month of January 2020 (+1%)."

The statistics also show that prices for other foods are on the rise. In Malta, meat prices rose by 17.6% in January 2023 when compared to January 2022. In the same period, the price of rice rose by 13.9%, bread by 2.9%, pasta products and couscous by 23.4%, and fish and seafood by 3.7%.
