Sunday, 9 April 2023, 08:20 Last update: about 2 years ago

Blue Door Education is a voluntary organisation based in Valletta, providing free literacy, language and life skill classes, both in person and online, for migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. Education enables upward social mobility and each additional skill can mean higher income, leading to better access to nutritious food, sanitation, healthcare and accommodation. The hands-on linguistic first aid and practical skills courses provided help refugees and asylum seekers rebuild their lives in their new host country and in the last 12 months many Ukrainians have become service users.

This year Blue Door Education is celebrating its 10th year anniversary and continues to operate out of St Andrew's Scots church in Valletta, whose members founded it 10 years ago to provide linguistic assistance to congregation members struggling with daily life.

Blue Door Education is about to stage the fund-raising event Marshall Arts on 13 April at 8pm, where the legendary musician Wayne Marshall OBE will generously play free of charge. In this one-night-only performance on organ and piano, the programme includes:

●                    Improvising on Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue

●                    Toccata and Fugue BWV565 by J. S. Bach

Marshall will also improvise on themes requested by audience members. This concert also includes an exclusive glimpse of two exceptionally talented young artists, Marshall's own children, Martina and James.

The event will be sponsored by APS Bank, Christine X Art, D'Amato Fine Tunes, Definiti(ve)ly Good Guide, Frank Salt Real Estate, Malta Sailing Experiences, Sourdough Hub, St Andrew's Scots church and UNHCR Malta.

All proceeds go to Blue Door Education (VO/2165).
