Ħamrun Spartans celebrate football league title

Saturday, 22 April 2023, 17:53 Last update: about 2 years ago

Ħamrun Spartans today celebrated their ninth championship in style, with a sizeable crowd turning up at Ta’ Qali national stadium to attend the last game of the league.

The streets of Hamrun were decorated in black and red colours as the whole locality marked the historic event.

Hamrun had already secured the title a few weeks ago, with the trophy being presented today at the end of the match against Gudja, which Hamrun won 2-0 with goals from Elvis Mashike and Ryan Camenzuli, scored in the 2nd and 11th minute respectively.

Following the match, the President of the MFA, Bjorn Vassallo, presented the trophy to Ħamrun captain Steve Borg.

This was the second championship victory for Hamrun under the Presidency of Joseph Portelli, with the previous victory two years ago being disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Spartans have secured their place in the UEFA Champions League in summer after a 33-year absence. A previous suspension from UEFA due to a case from several years ago prevented them from competing in European competitions, despite winning the championship two years ago.

Ħamrun Spartans are the fifth team to have won the most honours in the history of Maltese football, following Sliema Wanderers, Floriana, Valletta, and Hibernians. The club has also won the FA Trophy six times and the Super Cup five times.
