GSSE 2023: Malta races to 47 medals, breaking record

Malta’s success at the Games of the Small Nations continued Thursday with another eight gold medals, with its total haul now reaching 47 podium finishes, up from the previous record of 44 reached in 2003.

Malta has now won 20 gold medals, with the previous record being 11 on 2003.

Claire Azzopardi won gold and Rebecca Sare silver in the triple jump.

Shooter Matthew Grech also placed first in the men’s double trap competition.

Three other gold medals when swimmer Georgia Bohl won the 100m breaststroke, Kyle Micallef came first in the 50 metres freestyle and Janet Richard topped the list in the 400m athletics.

Runner Gina McNamara came first in the 1,500 metres after having triumphed in the 800 metres last Tuesday.

Renata Stribkova and Iacob Camella won gold after a nail-biting decider in table-tennis, their second gold after the team event,

Malta won gold in squash after beating Liechtenstein 3-1. Malta's players were Daniel Zammit Lewis, Kijan Sultana, Brad Hindle Deguara and Duncan Stahl.
