Maltese voters in Gozo

Your editorial in The Malta Independent on Thursday 28 Sep – The Maltese Vote in Gozo is interesting but not alarming.

What’s wrong with having so much Maltese entitled to vote in Gozo?

The election result – first count - is not going to be altered as those of either party will still vote for their party members irrespective of whether they do so in Gozo or Malta.

Far from it, this should be a golden opportunity for those aspiring to contest the election to venture out of their comfort zone and seek to contact any of these Maltese voters for their feedback and what needs to be improved in Gozo.

This is a situation which has been going on for many years though the number of Maltese voters was in the region of about 3,000. Gozitan MPs were aware of this situation. They relied on their party peers in Malta in the respective electoral districts to guide these voters for whom to cast their vote in Gozo.

There were isolated cases when few of these voters were so impressed with the performance of a Gozitan candidate that they sidelined their party allegiance and preferred him/her at the ballot place.
