Rock Classics of the ’60s & ’70s

Wednesday, 18 October 2023, 13:07 Last update: about 7 months ago

The third lap of a whirlwind voyage of different genres in three months

From Opera vs Pop at Ggantija Temples in August, to Germany tour with Beethoven's 5th Symphony treated in the past, present and AI versions (with a visit to Beethoven's birth place in Bonn on the side) in September to Rock Classics of the 60's and 70's at Aurora Theatre this October.

What an absolute pleasure to be back on home ground in Gozo, for what we believe will be a very special evening.

On Friday 27 October at 8pm, for one night only, The Gozo Youth Orchestra, 7SPP, and, with the support of Festivals Malta, will present our latest collaboration. Rock Classics of the '60s and '70s is our latest and most challenging rock orchestral production, in a series of outstanding rock orchestral events performed here at the Aurora. This can prove an added value event to those come over to Gozo for the Opera weekend at Astra. Our show is just in the middle of the Thursday and Saturday opera performances. So let loose your gala attire and come and have a great night of rock orchestral classics.

The line-up will feature The Gozo Youth Orchestra under the direction of our Musical Director, Maestro Joseph Grech. They will once again be joined by Gozo's finest, Cash & Band, led by John 'Cash' Cassar. Also appearing on the night, will be a hugely talented line up of local guest vocalists.  Dorothy Bezzina, Sarah Bonnici, Kurt Cassar, Ludwig Galea, Neville Refalo, are among the best-known singers on the Maltese music scene. The backing vocals will be provided by The 7SPP Choir, under the direction of Dorothy Bezzina.

The challenge of performing, 24 classic numbers selected from the works of some of Rock music's greatest legends, is an enormous but rewarding one. We look forward to that challenge and we hope we have found something to please all tastes.

Deciding on which numbers to cover was a very difficult task in itself. The show will feature classic numbers from legendary bands such as, The Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Led Zeppelin, Blondie, Procol Harlem, Deep Purple, Nazareth, The Animals, Pink Floyd, Boston and artists such as Elvis Presley, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Elton John and David Bowie. We are confident that there is something there for every fan in our wide fanbase. The scores for this show have once again been prepared by Mr. Daryl McKenzie, we are very grateful for his talents and wizardry. The scores which he prepared for our previous shows have been very positively received and are highly regarded. Mr McKenzie will be coming all the way from Australia to enjoy his orchestrations and direct 3 numbers himself.

We could not present our shows without the continuing support of Festivals Malta, Visit Malta, Ministry for Gozo, the Cultural Heritage Directorate within the Ministry for Gozo, Arts Council Malta and our sponsors The General Soft Drinks Co., Paul Stellini Design Studio, Aurora Bistro Café', The Duke Boutique Hotel and HOG .

We also greatly appreciate your support. Audiences like you guarantee the continuation of live events. It is so important for our younger performers to feel that engagement with a live audience. So we now hope that you will find the time to come and see our show. You won't be disappointed, all you will need to do is just sit back and let our performers transport you back in time with the sounds of the '60s and '70s.
