'In the Footsteps of the Hospitallers: 900 Years of Chivalry, Faith & Charity.'

In the heart of Valletta, the National Library of Malta has unveiled a mesmerizing journey through time with the exhibition 'In the Footsteps of the Hospitallers: 900 Years of Chivalry, Faith & Charity.' Open to the public until the end of February 2024 during library hours, this exhibition curated by Maroma Camilleri is a testament to the rich history and humanitarian legacy of the Knights of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM).

From the moment visitors step through the doors, they are immersed in a captivating narrative conveyed through meticulously curated maps, documents, printed works, and objets d'art. The exhibition skillfully weaves a tapestry of the Knights' journey, tracing their humble origins in Jerusalem during the mid-11th century to their present-day role as champions of humanity.

The emphasis of the exhibition lies in unravelling the history of the Order while shedding light on its contemporary significance. The Knights of Knights of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) continue their noble mission by providing unwavering humanitarian assistance to diverse communities worldwide. From aiding children, the homeless, the refugees, the elderly, and lepers, the Order operates without discrimination of ethnicity or religion. Its thousands of dedicated members and volunteers globally extend their support to victims of natural disasters, epidemics, and war, embodying the spirit of chivalry, faith, and charity.

What makes this exhibition particularly is its dedication to the memory of a distinguished Maltese member of the Order, the Ven. Bailiff Fra’ John Edward Critien, Grand Prior of Rome, who passed away on December 3, 2022. The display features a treasure trove of unique artifacts from the National Library of Malta's collection, including a map showcasing the Knights' headquarters across the Mediterranean until 1798, the Papal Bull approving the Hospital of St John dated 1113, a print depicting the Knights entering the Conventual Church of St John in Valletta, and a captivating view of the Aventine Hill in Rome, showcasing the Palace of the Order of St John. Complementing these are numerous items from private collections that have never before been exhibited, adding an exclusive allure to the showcase.

One of the most commendable aspects of this exhibition is its commitment to accessibility. Entrance is free, allowing everyone to partake in this cultural and historical experience. The National Library of Malta welcomes visitors from Monday to Friday, 08:30–16:30, and on Saturdays from 08:30–12:30. Additionally, on every third Saturday of the month, the library extends its opening hours until 15:30, providing ample opportunities for individuals to explore and appreciate this remarkable exhibition.

'In the Footsteps of the Hospitallers' is more than just a display of artefacts; it is an immersive journey that transports visitors through history, inspiring reflection on the enduring values of chivalry, faith, and charity. As the exhibition continues to enchant audiences in Valletta, it stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Knights of SMOM and their commitment to making the world a better place for all.
