Franco Debono still has what to offer to the PN, MP Alex Borg says

Nationalist Party MP Alex Borg has met with Franco Debono and said that the former PN MP still has a contribution to offer to the political party, and encouraged him to continue to move towards the PN.

Franco Debono can be considered a somewhat controversial figure amongst Nationalist supporters due to his actions in the Gonzi administration prior to the 2013 general election, but more and more voices have started to call for him to be welcomed back into the PN’s fold.

Gozitan MP Alex Borg has now added his voice to the growing chorus, becoming the first MP to publicly endorse Debono being forgiven and allowed back into the party structures.

“Many people, including me, see many of the points he writes as being good and valid.  There are other points which I don’t agree with.  But who agrees with everything after all?,” Borg wrote.

Borg said on his Facebook page that he had met Debono for a “frank discussion” on a number of points.

“I believe that Franco still has a contribution to offer” and that time and good will softens even the most stubborn of issues, Borg said.

“I believe that his thoughts were proven right from 2013 to the present day.  That to make a difference in politics and, more so, in people’s lives, the we needs to come before the I,” he continued.

“Him, us, together, we need to unite, and maybe also forgive and empathise so that as a party with a lot of talent and ability, and also history, it can continue to light the road which will honour this party and this country ahead,” Borg said.

“That is why I continue to encourage him to contribute.  To continue showing good will and moving towards the Nationalist Party so together we can make this country a better place for us and our children,” he continued.

“That’s why I encourage Franco and people of good will like him to be more active within the party structures,” he concluded.

Borg’s statement comes at a time when Debono himself was openly stating that he was ready to consider being a candidate for the Nationalist Party in the upcoming European Parliament elections next June.

PN Executive Member Roberta Bonello Felice over the weekend said on Andrew Azzopardi’s radio programme on RTK 103 that she was ready to recommend Debono herself, as long as he is willing to return to the party.

Debono has not held any position within the PN since the 2013 general election, when the PN was voted out of government.  He had voted against the PN’s Budget in December 2012, effectively bringing down the Lawrence Gonzi government which had a slender one seat majority over the Labour Party at the time.
