Former Project Green CEO Steve Ellul announced that his nomination to contest this June’s European Parliament elections has been approved by the Labour Party. This announcement was made last night by Ellul through his own social media platforms. The Labour Party confirmed what has been an open secret for months on Wednesday.

Steve Ellul is a 38-year-old financial analyst and a lecturer at the University of Malta. For several years, Ellul occupied key positions at Bank of Valletta where he was responsible for the management of Maltese and foreign investments, including in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Middle East.

After graduating from the University of Malta and attaining a Masters in Corporate Finance, Ellul became a Chartered Financial Analyst with a certificate of excellence in the sector. This certificate was issued by the CFA Institute in Charlottesville, USA.

In recent years, he became a consultant in the field of enterprise and sustainable development through which he promoted the environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) concept across the Maltese islands. Simultaneously, Ellul led the internal group related to economy within the Labour Party’s 100 IDEA process. This position saw him come up with a number of proposals that are now being carried out as part of the Labour Government’s electoral programme.

As the Chief Executive Officer of Project Green, Ellul helped the agency regenerate 40,000 square metres of open spaces across Malta and Gozo. He also played a central role in Project Green acquiring a package of €8.5 million worth of European funds for investments to local family parks in Fgura, Naxxar, Cottonera, Bengħajsa, and others.

Ellul resigned from Project Green before making his intentions to contest the MEP election publicly.

His candidature brings Labour’s list of candidates up to six: Daniel Attard, Marija Sara Vella Gafà, Clint Azzopardi Flores, Alex Agius Saliba, Jesmond Bonello and Steve Ellul.

Incumbents Alfred Sant and Josianne Cutajar have announced they will not contest while the other Labour MEP, Cyrus Engerer, is still to make his intentions known.
