New Nutrition Services at Active Ageing Centres

Saturday, 9 March 2024, 10:02 Last update: about 3 months ago

In 2023, more than 100 people in the community and around 1,000 residents in elderly homes benefited from a nutrition service provided by Active Ageing and Community Care, Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing, Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, said.

This service is now being extended to all Active Ageing Centres. The primary aim of these programmes is to promote good dietary habits and a healthy lifestyle among the elderly population, he said when he visited one of the centres in Dingli.

Through this service, nutritionists from Active Ageing and Community Care develop nutrition programmes tailored for the unique needs and goals of each individual. Nutritionists will also provide professional guidance in cases of chronic conditions.

Agius Galea said that a proper diet can prevent or alleviate age-related malnutrition and chronic diseases such as osteoporosis, high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. He also mentioned that a balanced diet provides seniors with the energy needed for an active life, whilst also helping them control their weight.

Through workshops, seminars, and educational sessions, these services provide the necessary knowledge to achieve these goals. In collaboration with other healthcare professionals, these programmes offer a comprehensive and personalized approach to a healthier life.
