Government, Opposition announce agreement on Myriam Spiteri Debono as President

The government and Opposition have reached agreement over the appointment of the next President of Malta, they said in a joint statement.

"Parliament will vote on the nomination of notary Myriam Spiteri Debono for the post of President of the Republic ina a session on 27 March."

"This vote will be taken after discussions between the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. Earlier today, the agreement that was reached by both the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader was confirmed in seperate meetings of the respective Parliamentary Groups."

The joint statement read that both the Prime Minister and opposition Leader also agreed that when an Acting President needs to be appointed, as per the Constitution, the Prime Minister will appoint Francis Zammit Dimech.
