At an Informal Ministerial Council meeting hosted in Belgium under the Belgian Presidency of the EU, Malta’s Economy Minister Silvio Schembri underscored the need for concerted efforts among EU Member States and the European Commission to bolster online safety and reinforce cable connectivity.

Minister Schembri urged for the implementation of robust education programmes and awareness campaigns to empower individuals and communities in navigating the complexities of online safety. He emphasized the importance of transparency in fostering trust while maintaining cybersecurity integrity and safeguarding privacy, particularly for minors, by enforcing age verification measures. Additionally, he stressed the need to preserve the right to express opinions, including anonymous expression, without propagating hate speech or inciting violence.

In the discussions concerning Europe’s digital infrastructure, Minister Schembri reiterated Malta's stance outlined in a recent White Paper, advocating for revisions that align with established telecommunications frameworks. These revisions should prioritize objectives such as promoting competition, safeguarding consumer rights, fostering internal market development, and, crucially, enhancing connectivity.

“Europe's digital market embodies diversity rather than fragmentation,” Minister Schembri emphasized, highlighting the varying needs of countries based on factors like size, market landscape, and demand.

Furthermore, Minister Schembri called for increased collaboration and solidarity among Member States to confront cyber threats effectively and protect economic interests. He emphasized the vital role of submarine cable connectivity for small island states like Malta and urged for expedited funding for cable projects of European interest to support connectivity and prosperity.

“Secure, trusted, and resilient submarine cable infrastructures are paramount for the EU's connectivity and prosperity,” Minister Schembri concluded.

On the sidelines of the Informal Council, Minister Schembri and his delegation engaged in productive bilateral discussions with Slovenia, Italy, and Cyprus, following up on the collaborative spirit fostered in the Med 9 meeting held in Malta last year. These discussions aimed to promote cooperation and initiatives in the digital sphere, particularly focusing on Artificial Intelligence.
