Secondary school graduates continuing their studies to receive free internet

Friday, 19 April 2024, 15:39 Last update: about 13 days ago

For the fourth year since the initial rendition of the scheme, free internet will be provided to students who continued their post-secondary studies immediately following their Year 11 graduation.

Approximately 3,200 students will be eligible to enjoy free internet for a year, following an investment of €1 million. This measure will benefit students who are eligible for a stipend and have continued studying at a post-secondary level in government, independent, Church, or vocational schools immediately after Year 11, otherwise known as Form 5.

The Minister for Education, Clifton Grima, said that the aid will be provided in the form of €300 vouchers. These vouchers will begin to be distributed during the last week of May and will be redeemable until the 31 August, 2024. The vouchers will no longer be valid after this date.

Minister Grima said that this measure has thus far received an investment of €4 million in four years and has benefited over 6000 students. He continued that this measure, along with other initiatives, is further confirmation of the government’s commitment to encouraging students to continue with their studies after compulsory education.

Eligible students will receive a link where they will indicate the internet service provider of their choice. Once they receive the €300 voucher, they will be able to redeem it at one of the three internet service providers on the Maltese islands, those being Epic, GO, and Melita. Students will be able to buy internet service for up to 12 months, and the voucher can be used to top up an active internet account that the student may already have.
