The Malta Police Force has said that there were no break-ins reported in Swieqi this year, up until 18 April in a right of reply to an editorial carried by The Malta Independent earlier this week.

In its Right of Reply, the Police Force referred to the Editorial published on The Malta Independent and on the portal independent.com.mt, titled “Feeling safe in one’s home”, published on the 22nd April 2024

The full right of reply may be found reproduced below:

"In response to the editorial published in The Malta Independent newspaper and independent.com.mt on the 22nd April 2024 concerning security concerns in Swieqi, the Malta Police Force wishes to provide clarifications and reassurances to the community.

Contrary to the assertions made in the editorial, there have been no reported break-ins in Swieqi between the 1st January and the 18th April 2024. However, the police did receive two reports related to suspicious persons last week.

Upon receiving these reports, immediate action was taken by the police. As outlined in PR194/24 issued on the 17th April, 2024, two men and a woman of Hungarian nationality were arrested soon after. Subsequent legal proceedings led to their arraignment in court, where they were found guilty as charged.

It is important to note that regular patrols are conducted in Swieqi and its surrounding areas by both the District and Community Police. These patrols are conducted in close collaboration with the local council and residents of the area. We also encourage the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity promptly to the police on either the Emergency Number 112 or the Crime Stop number 119.

The Malta Police Force remains committed to provide a professional and trusted policing service to ensure safety and security in partnership with the community."
