GSSE: Gold for men’s team in table-tennis

The men's table‐tennis won the gold medal yesterday at the An‐ dorra GSSE. The women's team had to settle for silver after losing the final against Luxembourg.

Both teams had dominated the qualifying stage and yesterday the started with the semi‐finals, in which bothe men's and women's team faced San Marino.

The women's team beat San Marino 3‐1 to reach the final, and the men's team did even better beating San Marino 3‐0. Both teams faced Luxembourg in the final for gold.

In the final the women's team, made up of Renata Strbikova and Maria‐Carmelia Iacob, were beaten 3‐1 by Luxembourg. Str‐ bikova lost the first match against Sarah De Nutte 10‐12, 11‐7, 4‐11, 7‐11.

In the second match Iacob made it level beating Enisa Sadikovic 11‐7, 14‐12, 7‐11, 11‐9. The dou‐ bles match was the most keenly contested with the Malta pair fi‐ nally going down 11‐7, 9‐11, 11‐9, 6‐11, 6‐11. Luxembourg won the decisive point when Sarah De Nutte beat Maria‐Carmelia Iacob 4‐11, 0‐11, 0‐11.

In the men's final Felix Wetzel beat Van Dessel 11‐8, 11‐2, 11‐7 to give Malta the first point. In the second match Luxembourg recov‐ ered when Luka Mladenovic de‐ feated Malta's Prokopcov 6‐11, 9‐11, 11‐13.

Malta regained the lead with a victory in the doubles, a very tight encounter which the Maltese won in the fifth set 12‐10, 11‐8, 6‐11, 8‐ 11, 11‐7. Malta's decisive point was obtained by Felix Wetzel who beat Luka Mladenovic 11‐5, 11‐9, 10‐12, 11‐9.
