The inauguration and blessing of the magnificent bronze statue of the Virgin Mary, crafted by the esteemed sculptor Chris Ebejer, was a momentous occasion. Held on May 16 in front of St James Hospital in Żejtun, the event was highly anticipated and widely covered in the media. Since I had the privilege of attending, I'd like to share a glimpse of what unfolded that evening.
In the days leading up to the unveiling, those who organised it and those invited anxiously monitored the weather forecast, hoping for the wind and rain to subside. The ceremony was to take place outdoors, with the Archbishop himself presiding over the unveiling and blessing of the statue - a moment eagerly awaited by all. May 16 arrived, bringing a fine yet blustery day. Wind is typical for the season, and as guests began to take their seats, there was a collective sigh of relief - no need to retreat indoors for shelter.
The event itself was a spectacle of reverence and beauty. More than just an artistic masterpiece, the statue now stands as a profound symbol of compassion, hope, and solace. It watches over patients seeking healing, families searching for comfort, and dedicated medical professionals offering their service to others. The Virgin Mary, immortalized in bronze and steadfast against time, serves as a quiet yet powerful testament to faith, resilience, and grace.
During the ceremony, after the unveiling and blessing, the Archbishop reflected on Malta's enduring legacy as a safe haven - a beacon of hope in a world often fraught with turmoil. His words carried deep significance, reminding us of the island's long-standing tradition of compassion, where generations have opened their hearts and homes to those in need. The newly unveiled statue now stands as a silent witness to this heritage, offering comfort not only to the sick and suffering but also to all who seek safety, dignity, and belonging.
Jean Claude Muscat, CEO and son of the Founder, Dr Josie, launched the evening paying homage to his father and also to those who organised the evening as well as the statue, its pedestal and its surroundings.
"Today marks a remarkable milestone for the Saint James Hospital Group and its founder, Dr. Josie, who has dedicated 39 years to building one of Malta's most respected private healthcare brands. The Group now serves 80% of Malta's private healthcare market, with nearly 500 employees and over 250 specialists, providing care to more than 500,000 people annually. This success is the result of unwavering perseverance, wisdom, and bold decision-making." He continued: "This occasion is about more than hospital achievements - it represents our values, inherited from Dr. Josie himself, who fought tirelessly for 15 years to establish this hospital, overcoming immense challenges. His vision didn't stop there; today, we unveil the magnificent statue of Our Lady, a symbol of protection, resilience, and love, designed to endure the test of time.
To all present: this is not just a statue. It is a defining moment, a tribute to our journey, our commitment to excellence, and our deep respect for the principles that have guided us. To Dr. Josie: this moment is yours. Well done, and may the Virgin Mary bless you and the entire Saint James family."
Dr Josie Muscat, Founder of this successful group of hospitals said a few words: "What began as a dream in the south of Malta has now become a reality. As we built this hospital, I felt something was missing - beyond the physical structure. That missing piece was a spiritual presence. From early on, I envisioned a space for healing both body and soul, which led to the idea of creating a statue of Our Lady - a symbol of compassion and guidance.
Through discussions with Albert Micallef, we refined the vision, collaborating with artist Chris Ebejer to bring it to life. Of course, realizing this dream required overcoming challenges, including securing permits and funds. I'm deeply grateful to the Saint James management team especially Mr Joe Paris, our Executive Chairman for believing in the vision and supporting it wholeheartedly... Finally. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped bring this dream to life. My deepest appreciation goes to Albert Micallef and Chris Ebejer for their passion and creativity. To the management team for their unwavering support and to all those who contributed - whether in planning, building or transforming this area - thank you. This is a moment of fulfillment and I am proud to share it with all of you."
Last but not least, a few words from the unassuming yet immensely gifted sculptor, Chris Ebejer. Addressing the audience, he shared that the idea for the statue of Our Lady took shape in May, two years ago, when Dr. Josie first visited his studio to discuss the concept. From there, models followed, bringing the vision to life.
The sculptor expressed his deep gratitude, feeling truly honoured to have been entrusted with yet another monumental work. After being commissioned to design the sculpture at Mater Dei, he now had the privilege of creating another masterpiece - one that would stand before a hospital, witnessing the countless emotions of those passing by.
Crafted primarily in Tuscany, the monument was then transported to Malta. The result was a classical sculpture imbued with contemporary elements. Our Lady's elegant figure, open arms extended in welcome, offered solace to all who walked past her. Unlike the traditional serene smile often depicted, this figure radiated compassion, an expression designed to connect with those seeking comfort. Ebejer also described the marble pedestal, specially crafted to harmonize with its surroundings, ensuring that the statue seamlessly belonged to its space. Dozens of rose bushes were planted around the monument. I want to take a look when they are in full bloom.
Gracious in his acknowledgments, Chris extended thanks to Dr. Muscat and all who contributed to the success of the monument.
A lively reception followed, where I had the pleasure of meeting Chris's parents and family members... and so many others. His mother shared a heartfelt memory - since childhood, Chris had always been drawn to sketching and drawing, an artist in the making from the very beginning.
Now, with yet another masterpiece gracing Malta, his talent continues to inspire. This statue stands not only as a symbol of devotion but as a beacon of hope and warmth for all who encounter it.
