Another interesting La Scatola Magica event

Wednesday, 6 May 2026, 12:01 Last update: about 3 months ago

La Scatola Magica welcomes Mercedes Mariotti, a former lecturer, scholar, and ceramics enthusiast. In 1992 she founded Contus de Arrejolas, which means Tales of "riggiole," ancient, handmade ceramic tiles. It is a unique tile museum, which she still curates, located in the historic Castello district of Cagliari. The museum features "riggiole" with extraordinary colours and designs, which once decorated the city's finest apartments. It represents a beautiful piece of Cagliari's past and details the lives of people living there from 1300 to 1900.

Contus de Arrejolas belongs to the National Association of Small Museums. The local Superintendency has catalogued 126 precious artefacts. Most "riggiole" come from the Naples area and Sicily, with some of the oldest and most precious examples coming from Liguria and Spain. They were largely brought to light during the restoration of the artisan workshop that currently houses the museum.

The event will take place on 12 May at 6:30pm at the Valletta Design Cluster. Free admission.
