The Malta Girl Guides (MGG) had the honour of meeting European Parliament President Roberta Metsola during a visit to the European Parliament in Brussels, marking a significant moment for the organisation and its members.
As a token of appreciation, MGG president, Carmen Camilleri presented President Metsola with an MGG national scarf while chief commissioner Rachel Aquilina, presented a small memento commemorating the association's visit. The meeting provided a valuable and pleasant opportunity to share the MGGs' story, values, and ongoing work in Maltese communities to discover girls' and women's potential and promoting active citizenship.
During their visit, the group also toured the Hemicycle and attended an orientation session, gaining insight into the workings of the European Parliament and its institutions. This experience offered members a deeper understanding of European decision-making processes and the importance of youth engagement at a European level.
The MGG visited the European Commission, where they met with representatives from the cabinet of European Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport, Glenn Micallef. Discussions focused on key issues affecting young people, including online safety, youth policy, and opportunities available at the European level.
The group comprised 40 women including members of the association's national board, council, international team and dedicated volunteers who tirelessly work within local groups to deliver educational and adventurous girl guiding programmes for girls and young women.
The visit forms part of the MGG ongoing commitment to fostering leadership, awareness, and participation among young people, both locally and on a European and world level.
