Prime Minister Robert Abela met with European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection Michael McGrath at the Auberge de Castille, the Office of the Prime Minister said in a statement. Discussions focused on governance, the rule of law, and human rights initiatives in Malta.

During the meeting, Abela reaffirmed the government's commitment to continuing efforts to strengthen the rule of law, building on a series of reforms introduced by the current administration to enhance governance standards and reinforce democratic institutions.

Abela highlighted one of the government's key priorities for its first 100 days in office: the establishment of a National Human Rights and Equality Commission. He described the initiative as another important step forward in promoting equality and safeguarding fundamental rights in Malta.

The discussions formed part of ongoing engagement between Malta and European institutions on matters relating to justice, democracy, and good governance.

Also present for the meeting were Minister for Justice, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima, Permanent Secretary within the Ministry for Justice, Research and Innovation Johan Galea, Head of Secretariat within the Office of the Prime Minister Colonel Mark Mallia, and the Prime Minister's Adviser on European Affairs Leandro Borg.
