Foreign mail has been a cause for concern, particularly since Christmas. Investigations have been undertaken regarding this problem, and have resulted in the following actions being taken:

• Air Malta has taken the necessary action regarding cargo handlers at London Heathrow to ensure that standards are met.

• The French postal administration La Poste has reviewed some recently installed processes at its new facility in Paris.

• Royal Mail has implemented further controls at London Heathrow to ensure smoother transit of mail.

• Australia Post has taken action to ensure its handlers transit mail with the least possible delay.

Maltapost said it adopted a “clear floor” policy, and all incoming foreign mail is cleared on a daily basis. Customers should note, however, that foreign mail bearing Christmas dates is still being received by Maltapost.

Meanwhile, all incoming foreign mail is now being backstamped by Maltapost. In response to the criticism received in recent weeks, the staff at Maltapost have responded and are committed to providing the best possible service, Maltapost said.

The company added that most branches are being refurbished, and this refurbishment programme will continue throughout 2004 and in 2005. A new counter system has also been installed, and after a period of testing, is aimed to improve service to customers.
