Queen Elizabeth sent her best wishes to Dr Fenech Adami and said she was pleased that Malta would be hosting the next Commonwealth Summit. She also said that she was looking forward to Malta being a partner of the United Kingdom in an enlarged European Union.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder also sent his best wishes and said he had fond memories of his visit to Malta and looked forward to more meetings with Dr Fenech Adami in the future.

Other messages of congratulations came from Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, German President Johannes Rau, Israeli President Moshe Katsar and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Luxebourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker and European Commission President Romano Prodi.
