The national broadband strategy and the national plan for information communication technology are the two pillars on which Malta’s future in the modern world rests, he said, and therefore more people need to be a part of this innovation.
Dr Gatt, who was talking at a meeting held yesterday regarding the consultative document of the national broadband strategy, explained that the consistent, fast and reliable internet service provided by broadband is essential for homes in contemporary society.
Broadband is used by 5.5 per cent of the Maltese population, he said, which compares well with the European average of six per cent.
In order for more people to be interested in using broadband, Dr Gatt explained that prices and availability must be considered. He said that Malta’s rates are currently in line with the European average but it was hoped that new prices will be introduced to make broadband more accessible to more people.
The use of broadband is important on a social level since computers are widely used in the work place, and thus the idea of broadband must be enlarged, the minister said.
Dr Gatt also spoke of further advantages of the internet and the use of broadband. Soon commercial, business and banking transactions will all be effected over the internet and this will depend on its availability and efficiency, he concluded.
