Malta Independent Saturday, 24 April 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Palazzo Falson, popularly known as the “Norman House”, is Malta’s finest complete building from the late 15th century, with parts dating back to the 13th century. It was the home of Captain Olaf Fredrick Gollcher, a scholar, painter and philanthropist who entrusted his valuable collection of art and antiques to the foundation, the stated aim of which is to promote interest in the national heritage of Malta.

The characteristic hood-mould over the two doorways and the windows are the finest in Mdina and the palace is of great historical importance. When Fra Philippe de l’Isle Adam, the first Grand Master of Malta, came to Mdina in 1630 to be presented with the keys of the city, he was received by the Falson family and resided in the house for several days.

The 45 different collections of artistic objects and historic relics entrusted by Captain Gollcher to the foundation include paintings, silver, oriental carpets and armour. Once complete, this historic house-museum promises to be one of the finest cultural attractions on the island.
