These pictures speak louder than words: there is not much need for elaboration. While it is true that government is working hard to improve the state of affairs in regard to our environment, these pictures clearly show that there are some areas in Malta that are in urgent need of attention.
Perhaps what is worse is that most of these photographs were taken close to residential areas. We all know what children are like when it comes to car wrecks, let alone abandoned boats, trucks and tractors. Every single metal item is rusted and many are mangled and jagged.
There are areas that have had complete make-overs – and thumbs up for that. But one look at this centre spread should be enough to convince anyone that parts of Marsa are an absolute mess and, what’s more, a health hazard.
The new cruise liner terminal is set to become a jewel in our crown and at the same time, Vittoriosa waterfront is really taking shape. But if we consider the following, we could be embarking on a project that could be ruined... by Marsa.
The Valletta waterfront runs right round to Marsa creek and if you continue walking – or driving for that matter – you reach the Cottonera waterfront. Imagine, in the future, a group of tourists who see for
themselves how beautiful the Grand Harbour waterfront is. They will also have heard how beautiful the Cottonera waterfront is and they might want to walk round. Just imagine what they would think of our country if they had to walk Marsa, which is only a short distance from Grand Harbour.
This time the whistle-blowers are The Malta Independent. Something needs to be done to rectify this state of affairs – not only for the people of Marsa, but for our tourism industry and ultimately the good of the whole country.
