Speaking at a press conference at the Mediterranean Conference Centre yesterday, Dr Zammit Dimech said that between Sunday and 8 May, the European Village will be up and running at Freedom Square in Valletta. “The week-long event will be jam-packed with performances from musicians, dancers and all sorts of other street artists from EU members states and other candidate countries,” he said.
He said that President Edward Fenech Adami will open the European Village, but before he does, Foreign Minister John Dalli and an EU representative will make short introductory speeches.
Dr Zammit Dimech said the European Village – which will be open from morning till evening to give everyone a chance to participate – will feature performers from Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Holland, Poland, Portugal, the UK, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania.
He said that the EU not only believes in cultural diversity, but tries to promote the culture of each and every member state in the entire union.
Dr Zammit Dimech thanked all those who pitched in to attract
such a variety of performers, in
particular Foreign Affairs Ministry
representative Charles Galea.
The celebrations would be at their peak tonight at Grand Harbour, said the minister. Apart from the light and laser display, there will be performances from a variety of Maltese artists and, in addition, there will be a concert at the Mediterranean Conference Centre by Miriam Gauci and tenor Joseph Calleja.
