President Drops five libel cases

Malta Independent Friday, 30 April 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 23 years ago

The cases dropped all dealt with what the president said were false allegations members of the Opposition had made against him in the media during his time as prime minister.

In one of the cases, Dr Fenech Adami had held Opposition Leader Alfred Sant accountable for libel. This was because Dr Sant had claimed that the prime minister was being blackmailed by Joseph Fenech, also known as Zeppi l-Hafi.

In another case, Dr Fenech Adami had held Kulhadd editor Frans Agius responsible for Dr Anglu Farrugia stating that the then prime minister had committed perjury to frame Ian Farrugia.

The president also dropped libel cases he had filed against the editor of l-Orizzont, Frans Ghirxi, whom he said had falsely accused him of being corrupt, and Glen Beddingfield whom he had accused of libelling him in his book Il-Gurament (the oath).
