Malta Independent Wednesday, 5 May 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

The motive behind the murder is not yet known, but the attack left Josette Scicluna with multiple stab wounds. There have been varying reports, but it is thought that she was stabbed 50 times. It is understood that the attack was at her own home and the suspect is her partner. She lived in Carmen Mallia Street with her and the suspect’s eight-year-old daughter. Neighbours called the police after hearing screams and other loud noises. In fact, the police are also investigating claims that shots were fired at the facade of the block of flats where the woman lived earlier in the day.The autopsy yesterday showed that the victim had sustained injuries to her hands, suggesting she tried to fend off her attacker. It is understood that she was still alive when rushed to hospital, but despite the efforts of doctors and surgeons, died of her wounds shortly after arrival while receiving treatment. There have been three murders so far this year and all three victims have been women. The suspect is being held by police for further questioning and is expected to be charged some time today. He was charged with attempted murder in a separate case last month and has also appeared in court in connection with drug offences. Police inspectors Chris Pullicino and Mario Tonna are investigating.
