History In action at Fort Rinella

Malta Independent Saturday, 8 May 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

This event will bring together more than 100 re-enactors from Malta and the United Kingdom to represent five different military units from Britain, France and Malta.

Together they will reconstruct some 100 years of military history, covering such conflicts as the Napoleonic, Crimean and South African Wars for the education and enjoyment of the public.

Two main displays will be held at 11.30am and 2.30pm in a specially adapted arena in the grounds of the fort, entrance to which will be through the main gate to Fort Rinella.

The displays will open with a skirmish between Napoleonic troops from the Historical Re-enactment Group of Malta representing French and English troops at the time of the French Blockade of Malta.

They will be followed by a spectacular display in military horsemanship consisting of a 12-strong British cavalry team recreating the 17th Lancers from the Crimean War period. This group, which is one of Britain’s best, has come to Malta specifically to take part in this event. Their presence in Malta is probably the first time in over a century since a full cavalry troop was in Malta. The men behind this group are veteran historians with extensive experience in the fields of heritage interpretation and the film industry. At certain points in between displays they will also provide instructional sessions in the art of military horse riding.

On the same occasion, Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna will be firing for the first time a recently restored unique piece of historic artillery. This cannon is an 8-inch rifled muzzle loading howitzer of which we had nine batteries in Malta for deployment on the Victoria Lines towards the end of the 19th century. This monster piece of field artillery is known to be unique to Malta.
