About 100 people from all walks of life gathered near City Gate in Valletta yesterday morning and then walked down Republic Street to Palace Square in silent protest.
Among the personalities who joined the march were former Hospice Movement head Claudia Taylor East, media personality and lawyer Dr Anna Mallia, Labour MP Helena Dalli and The Malta Independent on Sunday Features Editor, Marie Benoît.
The group donned black T-Shirts and trousers and some carried banners which included statements such as; “The Right to Live Free From Fear”, “Where is the law on domestic violence?” and “We need justice”. Women and young females were predominant among the demonstrators although there were a few representatives of the male sex at the rear of the march. After reaching Palace Square, the marchers dispersed silently. The march was allegedly inspired by the recent brutal murder of a woman in her home in San Gwann, which once again highlighted the lack of legislation, which is long overdue, on domestic violence.
