Farmers who produce fruit and vegetables in line with organic methods were given the opportunity to exhibit their products. A competition for organic products was also held for the first time in Malta. This included six categories, consisting of: best organic potatoes; best organic tomatoes; best organic zucchini; best collection of organic products; best other products; overall prize for outstanding achievement.
During the two days of the exhibition some of the farmers as well as staff from the Organic Farming Unit were available next to the stand to inform the public on organic farming and production. These were supported by information panels on the basic principles of organic farming. Leaflets were also made available to the public.
A total of 12 trophies were distributed in the award giving ceremony, held on Sunday evening,
by the Hon Dr Frans Agius, Parliamentary Secretary responsible for Agriculture and Fisheries, in these different categories.
In his message Dr Agius said that this is a sector which is growing healthy and that even in the European Union urges that Organic Products are to be encouraged and given all support. Dr Agius said that an organic farming committee was set up last month.
Dr Agius said that the aim of the committee is to set up a strategy for Organic Farming in the Maltese islands. Among the winners were two Gozitan farmers, and the Francos’ Foundation. Francos’ is a foundation made up of people with special needs. It is currently managing an organic farm at Ghammieri. Francos’ won first Prize in the category for Best Collection of Organic Produce.
