Annoyed residents noticed the absence of the sign and immediately reported the matter to Pembroke local council.

The residents told The Malta Independent that the main entrance to Pembroke is named Normandy Road, and was identified by a pavement-mounted concrete tablet at either end.

While all the allied countries were this weekend following closely the 60th anniversary commemorations of the Normandy Landings in France, it was noticed that one of the signs – at the main entrance to Pembroke (near the traffic lights at the St Andrew’s Road intersection) – was missing.

The residents added that through the years Pembroke has lost a number of historical monuments through lack of appreciation of our historical past by all and sundry.

They appealed to the local council to take care of the remaining road signs, including the one for Tunis Road which has been vandalised.

They also hope that the “missing tablet incident” will be thoroughly investigated and that all efforts will be made to find it so that it can be returned to its rightful place.
