This agreement stipulated that the dockyard workers were to be transferred to IPSL on a voluntary basis or after consultation with the union.

Earlier this month, without consultation with the GWU, some workers were asked to attend an interview with a private company. The workers who did not go to this interview were suspended for 15 days without pay. The GWU said they were not given a chance to defend themselves.

The management has not only ignored the workers’ rights to choose whether they wanted to work with a private company, but even failed to inform the GWU of its intentions, the union claimed.

The protest demanded the court consider this suspension without pay to be abusive and illegal and make provisions accordingly.
