Speaking to The Malta Independent, Fr Benedict Camilleri confirmed that discussions were under way to hand over the radio station based in Gozo to new owners. Asked for the reason behind his decision, Fr Camilleri said he did not want to disclose such information.

Asked whether the station was in financial difficulties, Fr Camilleri said this information was none of the public’s business, because it was commercial information.

But he finally admitted that he was ageing and was too busy to run a radio station any longer.

When asked, Fr Camilleri said listenership was good, adding that the station had been placed fifth in the classification of the most listened-to stations. He said advertising was also good.

The radio station currently employs 18 people, including a number of volunteers. Only one person had a one-year contract, which expired at the end of this month. This person, famous TV personality Enzo Gusman, was informed that his contract will not be renewed.

Asked whether the discussions involved Maltese or Gozitan people or companies, Fr Camilleri reiterated that this was no one’s business and that the people reading this article would not be interested in such information.

In answer to another question, Fr Camilleri said he did not have a date by when the discussions were expected to be completed, neither did he confirm when they had started.
