Australian-born John Pace, 39, who lives in Birkirkara, was also accused of assaulting and injuring Ms Abela slightly and breaching the peace.
The accused was granted bail against a Lm100 personal guarantee and on the condition that he does not approach the Abelas or the Msida St Joseph football club.
The court was presided over by magistrate Dennis Montebello. Inspector Stephen Gatt prosecuted while Dr Roberto Montalto and Dr Joseph Giglio appeared for the accused.
