In a statement issued yesterday, the UHM said the social pact will criticise the state of social and economic affairs.
Through this, flaws in the system can be identified and corrected.
The pact will help to overcome unemployment and the public deficit as well as to create a sustainable welfare system. Competitiveness can also be increased and unnecessary bureaucracy attacked, said the UHM.
The union is convinced that a collective effort to deal with the obstacles faced by society is the key to economic growth, job creation and social justice.
The challenges presented by globalisation, restructuring and the opportunities that have come about as a result of Malta’s EU membership are part of our reality and should be tackled with determination, the union said.
The UHM was pleased to note that 17 social members have given their views on the document published by the union entitled A Social Pact for Malta. This is a positive sign that several social categories are willing to make the collective effort needed to face the obstacles with which contemporary society is presented.
The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association, the Education and Employment Ministry, the National Council for Women and Alternattiva Demokratika were among the groups who had made a contribution.
Another three social partners are still due to establish their position on the matter. The union said it would be unfair to promise the people protection and then not deliver it.
The UHM is determined to nullify all those who have made arrogant and threatening public statements.
It said it is not prepared to let anyone take away what has been achieved through years of hard work, especially not for someone’s passing fancy.
