During yesterday’s sitting, members of parliament debated on proposed amendments to the controversial bill. Following an urgent meeting of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development on Monday, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said the government had decided to postpone the introduction of the eco-contribution indefinitely.

However, the social partners complained about the government’s indifference to their objections.

Later on during yesterday morning’s sitting, parliament also approved the Member of Parliament Act which gives MPs rights equal to other public officers.

The purpose of the bill is to allow MPs who hold a public office within certain grades to remain engaged in this public service while giving their contribution in parliament.

Parliament is now adjourned to 27 September after stopping for the summer recess.
