AD’s deputy chairperson and spokesperson on social policy and education, Mario Mallia, welcomed this initiative, “This initiative will help to increase environmental awareness among the general public and within the public and private sectors while ensuring that initiatives in this field are more suitable to the Maltese context. The choice of Fawwara for locating this centre is also ideal as those visiting this centre would have the opportunity of appreciating the Maltese rural and natural environment.”

Alternattiva Demokratika congratulated the University of Malta, the Ministry for the Environment and Rural Affairs, the Ministry for Education, youth and employment and Mepa for this joint initiative.

On the other hand Mario Mallia called on the Education Department to reopen the Field Studies Centre at Villa Psaigon in Dingli for school children and non-government organisations.

“Unfortunately this place has been closed for several years. In the past this place served to increase environmental awareness among children while offering them the chance of putting into practice what they learned during science and environmental science lessons. Alternattiva Demokratika called on the authorities to ensure that the person appointed to lead this centre would have the necessary qualifications in environmental and/or natural science.”
