A historic military battery at Tal-Ferħa in Għargħur is set to be transformed into a secure therapeutic centre for young people facing emotional difficulties and severe behavioural challenges, as the government launched the process to develop the facility, the Ministry for Social Policy and the Family said in a statement.

The centre will accommodate up to 18 young people requiring secure therapeutic intervention. According to the ministry, residents will receive personalised support plans tailored to their individual needs, including therapeutic care, education, vocational training and aftercare following completion of the programme.

Speaking at a press conference, Social Policy and Family Minister Michael Falzon said the project reflected the government's commitment to ensuring that no young person is left behind.

He described the initiative as "another dream becoming a reality", adding that every resident would benefit from a comprehensive support programme designed around their specific circumstances.

Director General Alexia Vella said the centre would provide a second chance for young people experiencing difficult circumstances by offering a safe and therapeutic environment. She said the aim was to provide a positive alternative to challenging lifestyles while equipping residents with the guidance, confidence and skills needed to build a better future.

Vella described the project as more than just a new facility, saying it would introduce a model of intervention bringing together different forms of support under one roof.

She added that any decision to place a minor at the centre would require court approval, ensuring that the intervention is necessary, proportionate and always in the child's best interests. She said the residential support provided would be tailored to the needs of each young person.
