Members of the Civil Protection Department rushed to the scene because the woman driver was trapped inside the car. When they arrived, they found that she was complaining of pain in her back. They had to get her out of the car with extreme care in order not to cause any more damage to her spine.

As soon as the woman had been removed from the car and placed in the ambulance to be rushed to hospital, firemen received another emergency call about an accident on the Rabat Road, at the intersection leading to Ta’ Qali. The Malta Independent staff followed CPD fire engines to the scene where there was an Izuzu truck lying on its side and a badly-damaged green Hyundai Accent. It is understood that the truck was turning into the road leading to Ta’ Qali when it was involved in a collision with the Hyundai.

The truck, which was carrying sacks of animal feed, tipped on to its side on impact. The driver of the truck, a 33-year-old man from Nadur, Gozo, was luckily only complaining of pain in his shoulder.

The Hyundai’s driver, an 18-year-old from Birkirkara, got out of the car on his own but was not feeling well so sat on a nearby wall. He had cuts and bruises and was also complaining of back pain. The 21-year-old passenger in the Hyundai was brought out of the car after a lengthy operation involving doctors and members of the CPD, because of the back injuries he sustained.

Both men were taken to hospital where they were treated for the serious injuries they had sustained. The passenger was found to be suffering from more severe injuries than the driver. Birkirkara and Mosta district police are investigating the accidents.
