VAT Department to increase inspections

Malta Independent Tuesday, 24 August 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

In a statement issued yesterday, the department warned entrepreneurs and the public that inspections will be increased. The VAT inspectors will be asking the consumers whether they were given a fiscal receipt and where they had made their purchases.

The VAT law requires the consumer to keep the receipt issued for at least 24 hours.

The department claimed it will also be analysing the VAT returns sent by the entrepreneurs. In case of any discrepancies, the establishment and its operator will be thoroughly investigated and tax estimates will be issued according to the case at hand.

The public is being urged to cooperate with the VAT inspectors to fight VAT evasion.
