Repubblika has condemned the Nationalist Party (PN) for failing to publish its financial accounts since 2020, describing the situation as "unacceptable" and a violation of Malta's electoral laws.
The rule of law NGO urged the Opposition party to immediately publish its unaudited books while audit issues are resolved.
The call came in response to a Times of Malta report that the PN, under leader Bernard Grech, has not filed a single statement of accounts for the years 2021, 2022, 2023, or 2024. It said that the party is also missing donation reports for 2022-2024
Repubblika said the publication of political party accounts is an essential tool for transparency and public oversight in the fight against corruption. "We are not convinced by the excuse that this is the fault of the auditor," the NGO said, stressing that the legal obligation to publish audited accounts rests with the party itself.
Speaking to Times of Malta, Grech said the PN is still waiting for its auditor to finalise the documentation. He declined to provide a timeline for publication, stating that he prefers "mature politics" and only makes promises he can keep. "You must appreciate that the PN is a complex entity," Grech said.
The situation has led to repeated calls for action, including a judicial protest by Labour MEP candidates in 2024 and a request by MEP Alex Agius Saliba for the European People's Party to investigate the matter.
Repubblika stressed that other parties - including smaller ones like ADPD, Volt, and Floriana l-Ewwel - have met their legal obligations. "We expect nothing less from any political party," the NGO said, urging the PN to correct the situation without further delay.
