Combating Illiteracy

Malta Independent Friday, 27 August 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 23 years ago

Dr Sant was speaking during a visit to the Sajfmana project which is aimed at assisting eight to 10-year-old children to improve their writing and reading skills. He said such initiatives are very healthy because the problem of illiteracy was widespread and had to be tackled with innovative methods.

Dr Sant said the Malta Labour Party was willing to join forces with other organisations in order to help combat this problem. He said the Education Ministry seems interested in such programmes, adding that the party was prepared to work hand in hand with the ministry in an attempt to solve this problem.

During the Sajfmana project, participating children were also taken on visits to the libraries, shelters and also met people who lived in shelters during World War II.
