Last Saturday evening, the Armed Forces of Malta were alerted by the skipper of a fishing trawler that a 15-foot boat carrying illegal immigrants had been spotted. The boat was reported to be adrift, with children on board.

The AFM patrol boat picked up 14 men, two women, four children and a baby from the drifting boat.

The immigrants claimed to be from South Africa, Congo, Liberia and Somalia.

The group had been at sea for several days but none were in need of urgent medical assistance.

On their arrival in Malta, the immigrants were handed over to the immigration police for the necessary investigations. They will be accommodated at the AFM’s Safi barracks.
