All’s Well that ends well for couple who wed in Malta

Malta Independent Sunday, 12 September 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

James and Janice Wright, from Ambleside Road in South Reddish, were married on 3 August at a private service in Malta. They met over the Internet while James was recovering from serious brain injury in a Northern Ireland hospital, the Stockport Express reported.

James, known as Shay, was knocked down by a drunk driver in March 2001. After spending two months in a coma in hospital, James was unable to walk, talk, eat or even dress himself.

After months of struggling he was able to return home, but became a complete recluse and only communicated with the outside world using the Internet on his television.

It was in a chat room that he met Janice and the pair struck up an instant friendship. In August last year they met for the first time and instantly hit it off.

But then tragedy struck a second time on 12 September last year when Janice was travelling along the M56, close to Warrington, to pick James up from the airport.

She was involved in a horrific smash, crashing into two cars which had already been involved in an accident. It took fire fighters two hours to free her from the wreck and she spent two months in Stepping Hill recovering from her injuries.

Janice, who worked with children with special needs before the accident, broke her left femur and shattered her left heel. She also broke every bone in her right foot.

Several operations later, which included grafting bone from her hip into her heel and mending bones with screws, Janice was finally able to walk short distances without her wheelchair in May this year.

Janice, who is mum to Claire, 16, and Jack, eight, said: “I couldn’t have done this without James and my family. I was determined I was going to be able to walk down the aisle.

“James has been my legs and I have been his brain. We had a wonderful wedding in Malta, it was really beautiful.”

The couple are planning a wedding reception in Stockport later this month.
