Dr Gonzi said that the total amount of investment in capital projects was of about Lm170 million.

Dr Gonzi said huge private projects such as the ones in Tignè, Manoel Island, the Cottonera and the Cruise liner terminal went hand in hand with government’s environmental and infrastructural projects.

The prime minister made these comments during a PN activity in Gzira. Dr Gonzi said that when he became prime minister five months ago, he put the environment and capital projects at the very top of government’s top-10 list of priorities.

“But everyone must do his bit if we are to have a better environment. We are trying to create a better environment for locals and tourists to relax and have fun in. A better environment will mean more tourist arrivals,” he said.

Dr Gonzi continued: “We are putting particular emphasis on improving the aesthetics of the Grand Harbour so the gateway to our country will be one that attracts people as soon as they arrive.”

Dr Gonzi said the cruise liner industry was growing and Malta needed to exploit it and that is why such a massive project

is underway at the Valletta

waterfront.

Dr Gonzi said local businessmen knew the potential of the terminal, so much so that 200 people wanted to set up shop inside. “We must also not forget that we have had embellishment projects in Gzira, Sliema and St Julian’s, Paceville and Pembroke,” he said.

The Prime Minister also mentioned that various roads were being built and that a link road between Gzira and Kappara was also being planned. These roads, he said were being built thanks to both EU and government funds. At the end of the activity, Dr Gonzi paid tribute to deceased Nationalist MP John Vella, who had represented Malta in the Council of Europe. He said Mr Vella had always done the country proud.

Meanwhile, yesterday afternoon Dr Gonzi visited the Floriana Granaries where the final preparations for the independence celebrations are being carried out.

The celebration programme starts today and ends on Monday with a grand finale lottery having a BMW Z4 as the first prize.
